Learn to Flirt even with Online Dating

Yahoo! Personals Canada

A lot of people will tell you that online dating isn't the same as "real world" dating because you can't flirt, but nothing could be further from the truth. Perhaps you can't run your fingers down the back of someone's hand, wink across a crowded room or use a suggestive tilt of the chin to convey your message on the Internet, but you can flirt in countless other ways. You just have to learn how to flirt properly on the Internet. If you handle things properly, you'll come across as intriguing and mysterious, and get your online date's heart thumping plenty!

The first and most obvious step in flirting online is sending that first message. In fact, many online dating sites actually have an option called sending a "wink" or "flirting" which is simply sending a quick note letting the other person know you liked their profile and would like to get to know them better. It's a safe way to break the ice, and is flattering. From there, however, it's up to you to keep the flirtation going. Keep your next e-mails light-hearted and friendly. Showing that you've really read their profile is always helpful - compliment their taste in music or books, or ask a question about one of their more unusual interests. Everyone appreciates an interest in their own passions. As your correspondence progresses, toss in a comment that might sound suggestive of where things could head (but please don't be vulgar!). In fact, a light touch is usually more effective than a heavy hand.

End your e-mail with a question that requires a sentence or two to answer. For instance, how did they first become interested in kayaking, or when did they discover their talent in the theater? This gives them the chance to tell more about themselves, which is always flattering.

Get Them Interested in You

Toward the end of your e-mail, include just one brief paragraph about yourself (not too much, remember, it should mostly be about them). Keep it short and interesting, and leave them hanging...a sort of "to be continued" air to the story is a great way to get a response. If they're hooked by your story, they'll want to know more and they'll respond and ask to hear more about you. It will be the beginning of what could be a wonderful online relationship.

Timing is Everything

Just like in the real world, a well-rounded person has a life outside of dating, so once you've written and received a response, resist the urge to send a dozen e-mails to your new online love interest. Nothing kills interest more than the appearance of desperation. Flirting is about expressing interest and than pulling back a bit - you're interested, but you have a life outside of the cyber world, and you want the person to be know that and want to learn more about it. It's a delicate dance, but if you handle it properly, you'll soon be meeting in the real world.
